Georgia: A Rich History in The Caucasus
Tour Leader and Historian - Tony Verity
Georgians regard their country as the most easterly in Europe: visitors soon discover that the blend of fascinating old churches, and superb cuisine all speak of a European culture has been enriched by contact with the East. Georgians consider hospitality an almost sacred duty.
This itinerary introduces many of the country’s highlights, churches and monasteries, as well as the powerful scenery, which ranges from the desert area in the southeast, to the mountains of the Higher and Lesser Caucasus.

The timing of this journey is designed to coincide with the best time for the harvest of fruit and vegetables.
Any visit to Georgia reminds us of the very ancient culture which flourished here with contacts with the classical world: that contact is echoed in the legend of Jason’s search for the Golden Fleece, and his adventures with Medea. Christianity was introduced to Georgia from Cappadocia (then under Byzantine control in the 4th century), so that the cultural history of the country reflected those close ties.
The tour is led by Tony Verity, a classical historian.
