Nomads Tent Africa Exhibition

In to Africa

Friday 8th October to Sunday 7th November 2010
Gallery Hours - Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 12pm to 4pm

Welcome to our first-ever African exhibition! Artefacts, jewellery and curios from Cameroon, Cote d'lvoir, Nigeria and seven other countries are waiting to be discovered... inside The Nomads Tent.

A fascinating Moroccan story is a the heart of the show: Author, mountaineer and world-renowned expert on Morocco, Hamish Brown has offered his personal collection of Moroccan art and artefacts to be shown at the exhibition. Gathered over a lifetime, and lovingly annotated, the collection brings Morocco vividly to life. The extraordinary tale of his end-to-end trek of the Atlas Mountains is told in "The Mountains Look on Marrakech" which will be available to purchase during the show. Hamish will be presenting an illustrated talk of that title on Wednesday 13th October, at 12.30pm and 6.30pm. Tickets, which should be booked in advance, cost ₤7. Proceeds will go to Mercy Corps' Pakistan flood relief work.

We are spoilt with African treasures; we are especially thrilled with the Benin leopards, but there are treats for every pocket. The South-African "Plastic-Bag Chickens" and bowls made from telephone-wire are proof that no real artist was ever stumped by a lack of resources. The textiles and beads from Ghana, Kenya and Malawi are gorgeous.

On Saturday 30th October we welcome Mara Menzies of the Scottish Storytelling Center. Blending Kenyan and Scottish storytelling traditions, she is much in demand across Scotland and received rave reviews for her show at the Fringe. Mara will be telling stories at 1pm, 1.30pm, 2pm and 2.30pm so please do come along. No booking for this is required.

African art is not seen enough in Scotland: so come treat yourselves to a feast of colour, beauty and ingenuity. You will receive a warm welcome.
